The Shaggette Series contains four true stories told by an abused stray dog. The first, A Diamond in the "Ruff," tells how the dog, nearly starving and suffering from thirst, finds herself on a cobblestone driveway out in the country. Out of fear, she hides in a nearby cornfield. Rosemarie, who lives in the house at the end of the drive coaxes the dog from the cornfield and with endless patience teaches it to trust in human kindness. The dog - now named Shaggette - inches its way into Rosemarie's heart as she befriends it.
